Emma Mackey’s Terrible American Accent In The Barbie Movie
Emma Mackey played Physicist Barbie. “This Barbie has a Nobel Prize in physics” one. In the movie, they also made it clear that she doesn’t want to wear pants because she is a physicist! However, the confusing bit was not her being a physicist or asking for pants.
Emma Mackey did try to make an American accent. She tried. I’m not even American, but when she said “weird” to Margot Robbie’s Barbie, I heard a crying eagle. Did she really have to have an American accent? Emma Mackey’s Barbie could’ve been the British one. At the end of the day, they live in a somewhat imaginary world. Or maybe, she is the one with a horrible American accent?
Letting Emma Mackey’s terrible American accent sly in the movie makes me think that the only reason why she got cast was because she looks like the Barbie herself, Margot Robbie. Because Ncuti Gatwa shared in an interview that Emma Mackey got the call before him and kept it a secret until he found out from his agency—just a cheap promo for the movie.
This indication indeed is true according to an insider article. And it’s quite sad. Margot Robbie told BuzzFeed “She plays one of the Barbies in the movie pretty much because Greta and I thought it would be funny.” So, this is why she got cast? Honestly, she doesn’t even look like Margot Robbie in the Barbie movie. Why waste time with Emma Mackey’s terrible American accent?
