“The Sex Lives of College Girls” is the latest Mindy Kailing piece of fine television. The first episode of the show aired on November 18th. However, I’ve just found a chance to watch it.
What is “The Sex Lives of College Girls” About?
Umm, the sex lives of college girls(!), but let me quote from IMDB for a second:
In my understanding, “The Sex Lives of College Girls” is about the celebration of the enthusiastic youth of young women.
The word ” sex” in the title is not a very big part of the show. Instead of sex; body neutrality, discussion of sexuality, and class stratification are the actual topics that are more spoken about.
A brief introduction to the lead characters:
Kimberly Finkle, aka Pauline Chalamet.
Kimberly is -in her words- from “the whitest town in the country, (her dad doesn’t even eat tacos!)” She is the example of the middle cast and another victim of the public education system.
Kimberly is a naive, lighthearted girl and most definitely my favorite character who happens to be performed by the immensely talented Pauline Chalamet. Kimberly has been Pauline’s most famous role so far, and with that, she is the most famous person in the cast. And, I love that! non-Instagram-famous actors deserve to have the stage light on them too.
Whitney Chase, aka Alyah Chanelle Scott.
Whitney is the daughter of a senator single mother. She is a football player which has been a struggle due to very misogynistic reasons.
Whitney was the most underappreciated character or just the most easygoing one. I am not sure. I want to see more of her character flaws next season!

Leighton Murray, aka Reneé Rapp.
Leighton is the poshest one of them all. She is an NYC girl. The biggest reason for her choosing the University of Essex was her dad being one of the old graduates and her best friends from high school also being in Essex.
Unfortunately- fortunately, her hypocrites’ friends changed their application forms right after Leighton applied. And, they ended up in different dorm rooms. This whole being stabbed in the back by her best friends’Â situation made her more bitter toward her new roommates.
Leighton %100 percent was my minor favorite character on the entire show. However, her character developed into an understandable and bearable young woman in a quite slow but acceptable way. Leighton figuring out her sexuality and attempting to accept it was sweetly genuine.
Leighton’s persistent statement that she doesn’t want to be titled the “lesbian girl”. And, seeing the reality of every time she entered a room, she had to keep her head straight and continue walking with the fact of the new adjectives that “define” her presumably being upon her as a person, I’m sure, made many of us feel seen.
However, the best part of her story this season was calmly relieving her truth to Kimberly and Kimberly wholeheartedly saying ” It’s better than casually not being yourself”
Bela Malhotra, aka Amrit Kaur.
In my understanding, Bela is Mindy Kaling. She wants to pursue a career as a comedy writer. As how Amrit said in one of her interviews, she is breaking down stereotypes as a brown woman by being the most “sex-positive” one. She also embraces her sexuality despite every potential social pressure.Â
On the other hand, Bela gets abused by one of her new friends. She deals with the power of the people who believe in the possible abuser rather than the possible victim.
And, in the end, she presumably will end up with a BJ Novak-looking dude.
No worries, “The Sex Lives of College Girls” is coming with a new season!
The end of the first season was a call for the second season. I want Kimberly to stay at school. Because with all of my heart, I believe she was trying her best. It’s hard to fit in, trying to fit in. Every one of the girls is trying which makes you want to see more because, in a way, you relate to them. Being young is arduous and witty. I can see and feel that whilst watching “The Sex Lives of College Girls”
